[Also in Division G1] In a nuclear reactor fuel element testing arrangement a radioactive gas, krypton-85, is sealed into the can with the fuel. The beta radiations from the krypton produce gamma rays at the aluminium sheath which are detected and used to indicate the quantity of krypton inside the element sheath. Leakage of krypton is determined by measuring the beta activity, due to escaped krypton, in the atmosphere external to the element. The gamma radiation is detected by a sodium iodide crystal mounted near the fuel element and the light from the crystal falls on a photo-multiplier tube. Krypton gas escaping from the fuel gas is collected in a chamber lined with an organic scintillator and viewed by a second photo-multiplier. To separate signals due to the fissile material from those due to the krypton, pulse height selection is employed.
