titleOfInvention High pressure gas discharge lamp
abstract 1,070,850. Discharge lamps. ENGELHARD HANOVIA Inc. Sept. 30, 1964 [Oct. 1, 1963], No. 39896/64. Heading H1D. A high pressure gas discharge lamp comprises an envelope 10 having a pair of open tubular portions 14, 15, a plate 16, 17 clamped to and covering each open end with an interposed seal 24, one hollow electrode 11 to which inlet and outlet conduits 29, 30 for cooling fluid are connected, and a second electrode which may either be identical with the first or is provided with a chamber for cooling fluid adjacent to the end plate to which it is attached. The hollow electrode 11 is preferably made from a copper tube 27 brazed to a brass end plate 16 and having a copper, molybdenum or tungsten end cap 28. In a D.C. lamp the cathode does not get as hot as the anode and may comprise a tip portion 31 of refractory metal, such as tungsten, thoriated tungsten or tantalum, mounted on a base 32 of copper brazed to a brass end plate 17. The end plates are secured by bolts 20 passing through collars 19 which bear against enlarged shoulders 22. The lamp is filled with xenon and closed off by sealing the filling tube 38 and electrical leads are attached to the end plates.
