titleOfInvention Condensation products of urea and aldehydes and process for making them
abstract Granular fertilizers are obtained by co-condensing 2 moles of urea with 0.8-2 moles in total of a C3- 4 aldehyde and formaldehyde, the latter being 2.5-50 mole per cent of the total aldehyde. In examples urea is condensed with isobutyraldehyde and formalin or paraformaldehyde, in the presence of H2SO4 and water, in an Eirich mixer or a granulating screw, to give granular products.ALSO:A granulated condensate is obtained by co-condensing 2 moles of urea with 0.8 to 2 moles of a mixture of aldehydes of which at least one is an aldehyde having 3 or 4 carbon atoms and one is formaldehyde, wherein the formaldehyde amounts to 2.5-50 mole per cent of the mixture, in such a way that the mixture is plastic throughout the reaction. The aldehyde may be propionaldehyde or butyraldehyde, and the formaldehyde may be used partly or wholly in the form of paraldehyde. The reaction may be conducted in, e.g. paddle screws, Eirich mixers, sigma-type kneaders, or rotary tubes, and catalytic amounts of mineral acids and water may be added. In examples urea is reacted with isobutyraldehyde and formalin or paraformaldehyde with and without returns from previous batches, in the presence of sulphuric acid and water, in an Eirich mixer or a granulating screw. The products are used as fertilizers.
