titleOfInvention Paint compositions
abstract Aqueous emulsion paints comprise a pigment and a latex of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, with or without a cross-linking agent, of particle size 0.1 to 2 microns, preferably 0.15 to 1.5 microns. The cross-linking agent may be triallyl cyanurate or glycidyl acrylate. The latex may be prepared by copolymerization in aqueous media in the presence of conventional catalysts and redox systems; non-ionic emulsifiers, e.g. polyalkylene oxide compounds; ethylenically unsaturated acids, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, maleic and vinyl sulphonic acids; protective colloids, e.g. polyvinyl alcohols, casein, starch and cellulose derivatives and gum arabic; and buffers, e.g. disodium phosphate and sodium acetate. The paints may also comprise anti-foaming agents, e.g. tributyl phosphate; coalescing agents, diethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate; resinous anti-blocking agents, e.g. esterified and hydrogenated rosins; and fungicides, e.g. phenyl mercuric acetate. Many suitable pigments are listed, and examples describe the copolymerization of (2) ethylene and vinyl acetate together with (1) sodium vinyl sulphonate, (6) triallyl cyanurate and sodium vinyl sulphonate and (8) glycidyl acrylate and sodium vinyl sulphonate, in aqueous media in the presence of potassium persulphate, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and conventional emulsifiers and protective colloids. Further examples describe paints comprising (3) latex (2), hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate, nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate, ethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate/silicate, phenyl mercuric acetate and diethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate; (4) latex (2), hydroxyethyl cellulose, polypropylene glycol, lecithin, a ditertiary acetylenic glycol, nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate, ethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, talc, phenyl mercuric acetate and diethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate; (5) latex (1), hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate, nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate, ethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, talc, sodium aluminosilicate, calcium carbonate, phenyl mercuric acetate and diethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate; (7) latex (6), hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate, nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate, ethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, sodium aluminosilicate, talc, phenyl mercuric acetate and diethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate; and (9) latex (8), hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate, nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate, ethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, sodium aluminosilicate, talc, phenyl mercuric acetate and diethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate.
