titleOfInvention Iodophors
abstract An iodophor comprises iodine dissolved in a water-soluble, non-ionic, surface active agent consisting of a polyoxyethylated polyoxyalkylated alkyl phenol wherein the polyoxyalkyl group comprises oxyalkylene groups having 3 or more carbon atoms. The polyoxyethylated polyoxyalkylated side chain of the surface active agent may have the formula: <FORM:1066437/A5-A6/1> wherein n and m are from 1-50 and A is an alkylene chain of 3 or 4 carbon atoms, and octyl or nonyl groups may be present in the para-position on the benzene ring with regard to the above side chain when the other substituents on the benzene ring are hydrogen atoms or hydrogen atoms and one methyl group. The iodophor may be stabilized by admixture with a quarternary ammonium compound of a diamine with a halogen compound as described in Specification 923,114. The stabilized iodophor may be further modified by the addition of a solubilization agent (e.g. ethylene glycol monoalkyl ether) and a buffer such as phosphoric acid.
