titleOfInvention Synthetic resin coating compositions
abstract Coating compositions comprise a mixture of (1) a potentially thermosetting aminoplast resin-forming composition and (2) a watersoluble salt formed from (a) a copolymer of more than 5 wt. per cent of one or more ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic acids and one or more alkyl esters of a monocarboxylic, such acid and (b) a trialkyl or dialkylmonohydroxyalkyl amine having an atmospheric boiling point below 175 DEG C. and heat of solution above 5,500 g. cals./g. mol. in amount sufficient to render the copolymer water soluble. (1) may be a condensate of urea, ethylene urea, dicyandiamide, melamine or benzo-, aceto- or formoguanamine with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, acrolein, benzaldehyde, furfuraldehyde, paraformaldehyde, paraldehyde or trioxymethylene. (2)(a) May be a copolymer of acrylic, beta-benzoyl acrylic, methacrylic, cinnamic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic, aconitic or chloromaleic acid and various alkyl acrylates, methacrylates or crotonates and may contain as a further comonomer styrene, ring alkyl styrenes, ring or side-chain halo-styrenes, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. The compositions (aqueous) may also contain fillers, dyes and pigments; polymeric stabilizers may also be present, e.g. methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer or the ammonium salt thereof. In examples, wherein baked films are formed on mild steel panels and aluminium foil, comparison is made between compositions wherein 2(b) is various of the defined amines and various other amines.ALSO:Coating compositions comprise a mixture of (1) a potentially thermosetting aminoplast resin-forming composition and (2) a water-soluble salt formed from (a) a copolymer of more than 5 wt. % of one or more ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic acids and one or more alkyl esters of a monocarboxylic such acid and (b) a trialkyl or dialkylmonohydroxyalkyl amine having an atmospheric boiling point 175 DEG C. and heat of solution above 5,500 g.cals/g.mol. in amount sufficient to render the copolymer water soluble.
