titleOfInvention Methods of forming phosphor screens
abstract In the process of preparing a luminescent screen by depositing a phosphor through a silicate-containing liquid layer and then removing the liquid, a layer of carbon dioxide gas is introduced above the liquid so that, when the liquid is removed, the deposited phosphor layer comes into immediate contact with the gas; the carbon dioxide interacts with the silicate to precipitate a hydrated silica in the inter-granular spaces of the deposited phosphor, and this prevents "avalanching" upon decanting the liquid. In the example, the liquid is a solution of potassium silicate with barium nitrate. After decanting, a thin volatilizable organic film is deposited on the phosphor, an aluminium layer evaporated on to the organic surface, and the envelope baked to volatilize the organic film.
