abstract |
Aqueous adhesive dispersions comprise a latex of a plastics material and the reaction product of an alkali soluble protein that is insoluble in water at pH 4-5 and a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol in the presence of an acidic water-soluble ammonium or metal salt in an amount sufficient to establish the pH at 5-7. Proteins specified are casein or soy bean, cottonseed and peanut proteins. Salts specified are ammonium and acidic alkali metal bifluorides, silicofluorides and dihydrogen phosphates or citrates; ammonium fluoride; diammonium monohydrogen phosphate or citrate; ammonium borofluoride; and zinc and magnesium silicofluorides. Latices specified are dispersions of natural rubber; styrene-butadiene and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers; neoprene; polyacrylates; polyethylene; butyl rubber; polybutene; ethylene polysulphide; and polyvinyl acetate. The compositions may also contain preservatives and stabilizers. |
