titleOfInvention Stabilized polyether urethanes
abstract Elastic polyetherurethane threads are stabilized by 0.1 to 10% by weight of a monoand/or polycarbodiimide. The polyurethane is preferably prepared by reacting polytetramethylene ether glycol of MW 700-3000 with either tolylene diisocyanate or diphenylmethane 4,41-diisocyanate and contacting the reaction product with a diamine, hydrazine or a dihydrazide. The carbodiimide may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic, and may be added to the starting components, to the spinning solution or applied to the threads after spinning. In Example (1) the reaction product of polytetrahydrofurandiol and tolylene 2:4-diisocyanate was converted into a prepolymer by reaction with diphenylmethane 4,41-diisocyanate in chlorobenzene. The prepolymer was reacted with hydrazine hydrate in dimethylformamide, pigmented with TiO2, dry spun to form a thread and then either (a) contacted with 2:6:21:61 - tetraisopropyl diphenylcarbodiimide for 1 minute at 140 DEG C., washed and stretched or (b) immersed for 2 minutes in di-(p-dodecylphenyl) carbodiimide at 140 DEG C., washed and stretched.
