titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of aromatic carboxylic acids |
abstract | Aromatic carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting an aromatic compound substituted by at least one methyl, hydroxymethyl or aldehyde group with O2 in an inert solvent, in presence of a catalyst containing (A) Sc, Y, La, Nd, Gd, Th, Zr or Hf or a compound thereof, and (B) Co or its oxide, hydroxide, organic acid salt or complex compound; where there are two or more ring-substituents, these are not in a vicinal position. As an optional catalyst component, there may be present Mg, Cu, Sr, Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Pb, Ge, Sn, Ta, Sb, Bi, Ag, Ni, Fe, Rb, Cs, Be, Ti, Ga, B, Si, Se, W, Mn or Pt (in practice, in the form of compounds), or an organic acid ammonium salt, e.g. NH4OAc. Examples describe the preparation of benzoic acid from toluene; isophthalic acid from m-xylene or m-toluic acid; and terephthalic acid from p-tolualdehyde or from p-xylene and/or p-toluic acid.ALSO:Catalysts for producing aromatic carboxylic acids by an oxidation reaction contain (A) Sc, Y, La, Nd, Gd, Th, Zr or Hf or a compound thereof, (B) Co or its oxide, hydroxide, organic acid salt or complex compound and optionally (C) Mg, Cu, Sr, Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Pb, Ge, Sn, Ta, Sb, Bi, Ag, Ni, Fe, Rb, Cs, Be, Ti, Ga, B, Si, Se, W, Mn or Pt (in practice in the form of compounds), or an organic acid ammonium salt, e.g. the actetate. The Specification gives many examples of such catalyst corporations. The walls of the reaction vessel may be Ni-Cr stainless steel containing at least one of Mo, Cu, Ti, Nb and Ta or of Ti or alloys thereof. |
