titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to prolonged acting pharmaceutical compositions |
abstract | A tablet capable of giving prolonged acting medication, but not including a tablet as claimed in the parent Specification, comprises a substantially homogeneous mixture of a water-soluble medicament, e.g. procyclidine, hydrochloride, benzhexol hydrochloride and methylamphetamine hydrochloride, in a medium comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable solid substance, e.g. casein, zein or soya bean protein, which is sparingly soluble in but slowly digestible by the gastrointestinal fluids and is present in amount of from 10 to 70% by weight of the mixture, and a sparingly soluble pharmaceutically acceptable hydrophobic waxy binding agent which is solid at body temperatures, said binding agent being optionally mixed with a solid fatty acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The tablet may be in the form of compressed granules or may be in the form of an inner core also containing medicament around which is a layer of the above mixture. The mixture may itself be coated with non-medicated and/or medicated layers. The binding agent consists of one of the following or a mixture thereof:-vegetable and animal waxes, e.g. beeswax, Japan-wax, spermaceti, paraffin wax, carnauba wax and wool fat; or a solid hydrogenated fixed oil or fat e.g. castor, palm or lard oils. |
