titleOfInvention Improvements in the production of sulphamic acid
abstract Sulphamic acid is prepared from urea, SO3 and H2SO4 by a continuous process at 40-100 DEG C., the rates of admission and withdrawal being such that (a) urea concentration is less than 2% by wt. of total reactants; (b) the SO3 is supplied in a porportion of <FORM:1062329/C1/1> moles per mole urea where E = 0.30 to 1.15, T = temp. in DEG C. and <FORM:1062329/C1/2> is greater than 1; (c) the reaction slurry contains at least 30% by wt. liquid; (d) the mean residence time is not less than 4 hours. When the reaction tem. is less than 70 DEG C. the product slurry is heated in second vessel for 8 to 16 hours at 40-60 DEG C. The resultant slurry is diluted with water to give a suspension of sulphamic acid in 70-80% H2SO4 before being filtered to give the solid product. The SO3 and H2SO4 may be added separately or as oleum, and the urea may be dissolved in H2SO4 and added as urea bisulphate.
