titleOfInvention | Improved polyolefin reaction products |
abstract | A vulcanizable reaction product is obtained by reacting a substantially saturated isomonoolefine polymer of high molecular weight with a brominating agent at an elevated temperature, whereby a brominated reaction product is obtained composed of chains of degraded polymer of which a major proportion possess terminal bromine atoms, and having a viscosity average molecular weight not greater than 20% that of the unbrominated polymer. The isomonoolefine polymers are prepared from isomonoolefines containing four to eight carbon atoms and having a terminal methylene group and they include homopolymers of isobutylene and copolymers of isobutylene with, for example, styrene. The brominating agent may be bromine itself or a bromine-releasing compound such as the N-bromo hydantoins and the N-bromo compounds of aliphatic carboxylic acid amides or imides. The reaction products may be vulcanized with polyfunctional amines, preferably those containing mixed primary and secondary amine groups and aliphatic difunctional primary amines. In the examples:- (1) a saturated polyisobutylene is treated with dibromodimethyl hydantoin; (2) a solution of a polyisobutylene in carbon tetrachloride is treated with bromine and the product is vulcanized with hexamethylene diamine; (3) a saturated polyisobutylene is heated with powdered N,N1-dibromo-5,5 -dimethyl-hydantoin and the product after compounding with various clays or fillers is vulcanized with triethylene tetramine and (4) an isobutylenestyrene copolymer is treated with bromine and the product vulcanized with tetraethylene pentamine. |
