abstract | Titanium peroxy compounds suitable for use as esterification catalysts are prepared by reacting titanium halides and/or alkoxy-titanium halides with water in the presence of hydrogen peroxide or materials "capable of reacting like hydrogen peroxide." By this is meant salts of hydrogen peroxide, organic peroxy-compounds such as benzoyl peroxide, ozone, atomic oxygen, salts of peroxy-acids such as persulphates and percarbonates, salts of per-acids such as perchlorates and periodates and other oxidizing agents which have potentials, at a given pH, greater than those of the titanium peroxo-compounds to be produced. A solution of the titanium halide, or alkoxytitanium halide in dilute acid or methanol may be reacted with ammonium or alkali metal hydroxide solution in the presence of hydrogen peroxide to form an ammonium or alkali metal peroxy-titanate which may then be hydrolysed to a hydrated titanium peroxide or peroxytitanic acid. |
