titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of porous shaped bodies that contain ion exchange synthetic resins
abstract Porous shaped bodies containing ion-exchange resins made by mixing the ion-exchange resin with a fibrous material, moistening the mixture with a liquid in which the binder used is not soluble, mixing the mixture with a binder and removing the liquid from the shaped material (see Division C3), may be used to catalyse the production of (a) dimethoxymethane from methanol and formaldehyde, (b) acetone from a mixture of acetic acid and isopropenyl acetate, (c) diacetone alcohol from acetone, (d) ethyl acetoacetate from diketene and ethanol and (e) methyl acetate from acetic acid and methanol.ALSO:A porous shaped body containing an ionexchange synthetic resin is made by mixing the ion-exchange resin with a fibrous material, moistening the mixture with a liquid in which the binder used is not soluble, mixing the mixture with a binder and removing the liquid from the shaped material. The mixture may also contain a filler which can be removed by dissolving it out of the shaped body or which can remain therein. The fibrous material may be inorganic or organic such as glass, rock wool, slag wool, asbestos, wool, cellulose or a cellulose derivative, vinyl polymer, a polyamide, polyester, polyethylene or polyacrylic fibres and the binder may be polyethylene, an acrylic resin, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, acetate or alcohol, polyvinylidene chloride, a polyamide, a cellulose derivative, a phenol-formaldehyde precondensate, an epoxy resin, a polyurethane, a polyester, an aminoplast or a silicone. The ion-exchange synthetic resin may be a sulphonated styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer, a sulphonated phenol-formaldehyde resin, or other type of ion-exchange resin containing sulphonic acid, carboxylic acid or quaternary ammonium groups.
