titleOfInvention | Process for purifying acetone |
abstract | Pure acetone is produced from an aqueous solution of crude acetone (especially that produced by direct oxidation of propylene with oxygen or gases containing oxygen in the presence of an aqueous catalyst containing a noble metal salt of the platinum group and a halide of a heavy metal occurring in at least two valence stages) by a process of rectification and simultaneous treatment with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, preferably a 5-40% sodium hydroxide solution, which comprises conducting the aqueous alkaline solution countercurrently with ascending vapours of crude acetone in the upper third of a rectifying column which is of such a construction that the aqueous alkaline solution does not enter the sump of the column. |
