titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the preparation of vanadium chloride |
abstract | FeCl3 is removed from a vapour stream containing VCl4 or VOCl3 by contacting the stream with NaCl at a temperature high enough to produce a molten mixture of FeCl3 and NaCl, thereby removing FeCl3 from the VCl4 or VOCl3. The vapour stream may pass upwardly through a column of NaCl. on a screen and the FeCl3 and NaCl. form a low melting point mixture which forms a seal to the bottom of the column. According to a preferred embodiment ferrovanadium is treated at dull red heat with gaseous chlorine and the vapours pass up a column of NaCl, at 200 DEG C., packed on a screen. The NaCl/FeCl3 forms a liquid seal at the bottom of the column from which melt may be removed. The temperature of the trap in which the seal forms may be 200-400 DEG C. and the vanadium chloride vapours are condensed in a water-cooled condenser as they emerge from the top of the column. |
