titleOfInvention Process for regulating the molecular weight of polydiolefines
abstract In a process for regulating the molecular weight of polydiolefines a diolefine is polymerized using a catalyst comprising (a) a compound of a transition metal and (b) a metal, metal hydride or organometallic compound of a metal from Groups I to III of the Mendelejeff Periodic System, in the presence of an ester of an organic acid used in 0.01 to 100 times the molar amount of the transition metal compound. Suitable esters are saturated and unsaturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic esters having one or more ester groups, and both the alcohol components and the acid components may be unsaturated. Lists of catalyst components and diolefines which may be polymerized with mono-olefines, are given. In the examples butadiene-1,3 containing 0.01% isobutane, 0.01% n-butane, 0.1% butene-1 and isobutene and 0.05% trans-butene-2 is polymerized in benzene using as catalyst cobalt acetylacetonate and ethyl aluminium sesqichloride and one of the following esters:-ethyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, ethylene glycol distearate, dicyclohexyl phthalate or diallyl oxalate. The polybutadienes obtained are predominantly of cis-1,4 structure.
