abstract | 1,058,342. Tobacco smoke filters. PHILIP MORRIS Inc. March 19, 1965 [April 20, 1964], No. 11871/65. Heading A2C. A filter for smoking articles, e.g. cigarettes, comprises a sorbent section 11, free of flavourants, and a flavour containing section 7, the sections 7 and 11 being connected in parallel. A conventional tow filter section 5a may also be included. The sorbent section, which may be separated from the flavour containing section by a vapour barrier 16, preferably comprises crimped paper and activated carbon and the flavour containing section 7 preferably comprises crimped paper, activated carbon and a sorbed flavourant. Silica gel may be used instead of activated carbon, and base materials other than crimped paper may be used, e.g. tow, cellulose acetate and synthetic polymers. The base material may contain additives such as molecular sieves, crystalline cellulose, alumina, Fuller's earth, rice starch, cellulose powder and diatomaceous earth. Suitable flavourants are anethole, anisyl alcohol, borneol, geranyl acetate, carveol, piperonal, citral, eucalyptol, geramyl formate, benzyl butyrate, citronellyl acetate, fenchyl alcohol, isobutyl phenyl-acetate, isopulegol, menthol, nonyl alcohol, undecanoic aldehyde, citronellol, indole, terpineol, decanoic aldehyde, benzyl alcohol, and pheny-ethyl aceate and mixtures of such materials.
