titleOfInvention New fluorine containing resins and coating compositions formed therefrom
abstract Terpolymers of tetrafluoroethylene, ethylene and isobutylene in which the proportion of tetrafluoroethylene is 20 to 80 mol. per cent, the proportion in mol. per cent of tetrafluoroethylene is at least equal to the proportion of isobutylene, and the proportions of ethylene and isobutylene are at least 1 mol. per cent, may be prepared by aqueous emulsion polymerization of the monomers in the presence of ammonium persulphate, sodium borate, ammonium or potassium perfluoroctanoate, tertiary butanol and dodecyl mercaptan. The latices obtained or dispersions prepared by recovery of the polymer and redispersion in a volatile organic liquid, e.g. an alcohol, ester, ketone, hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon, may be used for coating metals. The coating compositions may also contain pigments, e.g. carbon black and inorganic oxides; stabilizers, and antioxidants, e.g. dicyclohexylamine. Specified solvents are methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, cyclohexanol, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, amyl acetate, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclohexanone, benzene, toluene, xylene, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethane, trichlorethylene and perchlorethylene.ALSO:Metals may be coated with dispersions of copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene, ethylene and isobutylene in which the molar proportion of tetrafluoroethylene is 20 to 80 per cent and is at least equal to the molar proportion of isobutylene, and the molar proportions of ethylene and isobutylene are each at least 1 per cent, the dispersing medium evaporated and the coatings heated above the melting point of the copolymer to form a coherent film thereof. The substrate may be iron, stainless steel or aluminium. The medium may be aqueous or organic, and the compositions may also comprise pigments and stabilizers. Many suitable media are specified including hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters and ketons. The compositions may be applied by dipping or spraying. In examples coating compositions comprising the copolymer, carbon tetrachloride, cyclohexanol and dicyclohexylamine are sprayed on to (1) aluminium plates and (4) aluminium rods; are coated by dipping on a sand-blasted iron plate; and are coated on (3) solvent-cleaned steel plates. The products of Example 3 are compared with those obtained by applying a tetrafluoroethylene/hexafluoropropylene copolymer dispersion to primed steel plates.
