In an arrangement for measuring the rolling pressure in a rolling mill holes 7 (Fig. 1) are bored in the rolling mill stand 6 and one or more transducers are inserted in each hole the transducers providing an electrical output proportional to the stresses on the walls of said holes. The transducer may be of the kind described in Specification 1, 022, 178. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the transducer is of generally cylindrical form and comprises four cores 9 situated respectively at the four corners of a rectangular plane normal to the longitudinal axes of the cores. Each core has a winding 10 and diagonally opposite windings are connected in pairs, one pair being connected to an A. C. supply while the other pair emit electrical output signals which vary in magnitude with the mechanical stresses on the hole walls which stresses are communicated to the cores 9. There may be several transducers distributed along the length of each hole, Fig. 2 (not shown), thereby providing a measure of the pressure distribution on roller 2, which is communicated through sets of intermediate support rollers 3, 4, 5 to the rolling stand, and the electrical output is measured by a measuring device (not shown). All the outputs may be summed thereby providing a measure of the total rolling pressure. The axes of the holes are preferably parallel to the axes of the rollers. Instead of the transducers described, resistance strain gauge transducers may be glued in the holes.
