titleOfInvention Photographic products and processes
abstract Polymers containing OH, NH2 or SH groups are hardened by reacting with acrolein or acrolein dimer, in either monomeric or polymeric form, or a condensate of acrolein which is water-soluble, contains at least three carbonyl groups per molecule and is produced by reacting acrolein with a compound containing at least one aldehyde group and at least one active hydrogen atom capable of adding to the double bond in acrolein, or compound yielding such a compound. Specified polymers are polyvinyl alcohol, gelatin, polyvinyl partial acetals, cellulose and cellulose derivatives. The hardening agent may be a condensate of acrolein with glyceraldehyde, 1,1,3,3 - tetramethoxypropane, 1,1,3 - trimethoxy - 3 - ethoxypropane and 1,1,3,3 - tetraethoxypropane. The process may be used in hardening photographic image-receiving layers. In examples layers cast from mixtures of polyvinyl alcohol and poly-4-vinyl pyridine are hardened with (1 and 4) a condensate of acrolein with tetramethoxypropane; (2) acrolein and (3) acrolein dimer.
