titleOfInvention Laminating process
abstract 1,056,603. Laminates. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Jan. 29, 1965 [March 27. 1964], No. 4079/65. Heading B5N. A process for making a poromeric laminate comprises wetting a woven interlayer of fabric of yams of mixed synthetic and cotton fibres, stretching the fabric while wet at least 2% in width and drying the stretched fabric, the dried fabric having the following chracteristics; moisture content less than 3% by weight, tensile strength at least 55 x 55 pounds per inch, break elongation 20-30% x 20-30%, modulus 2,000-4,000 x 1,800-3,800 p.s.i. at 5% elongation, thickness 5 to 6 mils., smoothness factor less than 20 mils., placing the dried fabric on a porous substrate, coating the fabric with a dispersion of the polymer, the dispersion penetrating the interlayer fabric and at least a part of the thickness of the substrate, coagulating the polymer and drying the coated structure to form a laminate in which the dispersion after coagulation bonds the interlayer fabric to the substrate and forms a smooth poromeric coating on the exterior surface of the interlayer fabric sufficiently thick to render the surface pattern of the interlayer fabric invisible to the naked eye but less than 30 mils. thick. Specified synthetic fibres are polyester, acrylic and nylon fibres. Specified polymers are those disclosed in Specifications 914,711, 946,069, and 981,642, e.g. polyamides, polyesteramides, polyesters, polyurethanes alone or in admixture with polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or diethyl maleate, cellulose esters, elastomeric polymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes, e.g. polychloroprene and copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile, polyureas, polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, acrylontrile, vinylidene chloride or maleic, fumaric or acrylic acid esters, polyvinyl butyral, poly-α-methyl styrene, polyvinylidene chloride, polymethyl methacrylate and copolymers of methyl methacrylate with acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile or styrene.
