abstract | Novel tricyclo-[4,2,1,02,5] nonanes, and mono- and di-olefinic derivatives and hydrocarbyl derivatives thereof are represented by the formula <FORM:1056054/C4-C5/1> in which the dotted lines represent optional olefinic linkages, each R and R1 represents a C1-C10 hydrocarbon group having no nonaromatic unsaturation, m is 0 or an integer from 1-6 and n is 0 or 1. The mono- and di-olefins are prepared by a Diels Alder condensation of a bicyclo-[2,2,1] heptene or heptadiene with an acetylene according to the equation <FORM:1056054/C4-C5/2> in the presence of a zero valent nickel complex. The use of a heptadiene yields as by-product a quadricyclo-undecadiene according to the equation <FORM:1056054/C4-C5/3> Alternatively, the tricyclononadienes are obtained together with bicyclononatrienes by pyrolysis of bicycloheptadiene dimer (see Specification 979,778) <FORM:1056054/C4-C5/4> at 200-525 DEG C. Mono-ene or saturated product is obtained from the diene or mono-ene by partial or complete hydrogenation. |
