titleOfInvention Unsaturated bicyclic hydrocarbons with condensed nuclei
abstract Tetrahydroindenes of the formula <FORM:1055688/C4-C5/1> in which R and R1 are each hydrogen or methyl are obtained by introducing cyclopentadiene, which may be supplied wholly or in part as dimer, and butadiene, isoprene or dimethylbutadiene into a solvent in a reaction vessel preheated to 80-250 DEG C. and co-dimerizing the feed. The product is preferably subjected to pyrolysis at 300-900 DEG C. to depolymerize homopolymers. The feed may contain 2-5 mols of cyclopentadiene per mol of acyclic diene and the solvent is a C5-C10 saturated or aromatic hydrocarbon. Dimerization is effected at 150-250 DEG C. for 0.5-4 hours, e.g. using autogenous pressure in an autoclave. Low boiling materials may be separated before the pyrolysis which is effected in a heated packed tube. A two-stage pyrolysis may be used, the first at 300-500 DEG C., the second at 500-900 DEG C. after removal of light products.
