abstract | 1,052,149. Copolymerization. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. March 2, 1965 [April 8, 1964], No. 8775/65. Heading C3P. Ethylene, and propylene with or without a polymerizable non-conjugated diene, are copolymerized in solution in the presence of a soluble catalyst capable of homopolymerizing ethylene but incapable of homopolymerizing propylene comprising an alkylaluminium sesquichloride and vanadium oxytrichloride, and as molecular weight regulator an amine N-oxide. The catalyst may be formed in situ by introducing separate ingredients of the catalyst admixed with monomer to the polymerization zone. The polymerization may be effected in bulk, or in a conventional hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent or diluent. The diene may be dicyclopentadiene, methylcyclopentadiene dimer, 1,4-hexadiene, 11-ethyl- 1,11-tridecadiene, 1,9-octadecadiene, or 1,5- cyclooctadiene. The polymerization may be carried out continuously; and the copolymer recovered by known techniques. The exemplified regulator is pyridine N-oxide. |
