| abstract | Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1045534/C2/1> (wherein R1 is hydrogen, methoxy or ethoxy; R2 is hydrogen, halogen or C1- 6 alkoxy; R3 is hydrogen or alkyl which itself may be substituted by halogen, hydroxy, an unsubstituted or alkyl- or hydroxyalkyl-substituted saturated 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring with one or two hetero atoms, one being a nitrogen atom <FORM:1045534/C2/2> through which the ring is attached, or an amino group -NR5R6, where R5 and R6 are hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or substituted or unsubstituted pyrimidinyl; and R4 is C1- 4 alkyl) and acid-addition salts thereof are prepared by ring closing condensation of the appropriately N,4,5 - trisubstituted o-phenylenediamine with an acid R1COOH (wherein R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or haloalkyl) or with an imino ether R11CH2C(= NH)OR (wherein R is alkyl and R11 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or hydroxyl) or a salt thereof, and, if desired, conversion of a 2-hydroxyalkyl product to the corresponding haloalkyl compound (which may also be obtained direct) and reaction of this with an amine NHR5R6 or an appropriate saturated heterocyclic amine. Starting materials are prepared by the processes. |
