titleOfInvention Amine salts of isethionic acid and derivatives thereof
abstract Primary or secondary aliphatic or aromatic amine salts of isethionic acid or a methyl substituted derivative thereof are prepared by reacting ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with a bisulphite salt of the said amine. The reaction is preferably effected at 100 DEG C. and at substantially atmospheric pressure in an atmosphere of an inert gas. Amine salts prepared by the above process may be reacted with an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or alkali metal carbonate to produce alkali or alkaline earth metal salts of alkylamino- or arylamino-alkylsulphonic acids. This further reaction is preferably effected at 150 DEG to 300 DEG C. in an atmosphere of inert gas and in the presence of a primary or secondary aliphatic or aromatic amine which may be the same as or different from the amine present as the salt reactant; two different amines will, however, yield two aminoalkylsulphonic acid products.
