abstract | The invention comprises an ethylenically unsaturated derivative of an ortho-hydroxy aromatic compound of the general formula HO.X.YR, wherein Y represents an oxy or carbonyloxy radical, X represents a phenyl or naphthyl radical having the HO and YR groups ortho to each other, and R represents a beta-hydroxypropylacrylate or beta-hydroxypropyl methacrylate group. The novel compounds may be made by reacting an intermediate HO.X.Z, wherein Z represents a hydroxy or carboxy radical and the Z and OH groups are ortho to each other, with glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate at a temperature in the range of 40 DEG to 100 DEG C. for 2 to 12 hours and in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, a salt of an alkali metal or a quaternary ammonium halide in a concentration of 0.1 to 5.0% based on the weight of glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate. |
