titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of 1,1,3,3-tetrachloropropane |
abstract | 1,1,3,3-Tetrachloropropane is made by a process which comprises reacting chloroform with vinyl chloride at 100 DEG to 170 DEG C. in contact with an oxy reductive system comprising Fe and /or Cu ions, especially Fe+++/Fe++, Cu++/ Cu+ or Cu++/Fe++, in different valency states. 1,1,3,5,5-Pentachloropentane is obtained as by-product. The reaction may be conducted in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. alcohols, methanol and a small amount of amine hydrochloride is added, preferably, to minimize hydrolysis of the metal halide redox system by the water of crystallization. The redox system can be introduced in the form of metallic iron itself. The examples describe the process employing ferric chloride trihydrate with methanol and diethylamine hydrochloride, CuCl2.2H2O with FeCl2.4H2O methanol and diethylamine hydrochloride. FeCl2.4H2O with FeCl3.6H2O and diethylamine hydrochloride and CuCl2.2H2O with diethylamine hydrochloride. |
