titleOfInvention Furochromone compounds
abstract The invention comprises furochromone derivatives of the general formula <FORM:1042192/C2/1> in which R1 is an o-, m- or p-carboxyphenyl group, an o-, m-, or p-carboxyphenylalkylene group of the formula <FORM:1042192/C2/2> in which R4 is an unsaturated alkylene group, a 2-, 3-, or 4-pyridyl group or a 2-, 3- or 4-pyridylalkylene group of the formula <FORM:1042192/C2/3> in which R4 is as defined above; R2 is a hydroxy alkoxy, substituted aminoalkoxy or carboxyalkoxy; and R3 is a hydrogen atom, or a lower alkoxy group; and salts and esters of those compounds in which R1 contains a carbonyl group and acid addition salts and quaternary derivatives of the compounds in which R1 contains a pyridyl group. Compounds of the first of the above formulae (a) where R1 is a carboxyphenyl, esterified carboxyphenyl or a pyridyl group are obtained by condensing a compound of the formula <FORM:1042192/C2/4> wherein R2 and R3 are as defined above, with a compound of the formula R5.COO.R6 in which R5 is an o-, m- or p-carboxyphenyl group or a 2-, 3- or 4-pyridyl group and R6 is an alkyl group, in the presence of a condensing agent and subsequently cyclizing the resultant diketone and (b) wherein R1 is carboxyphenylvinyl or pyridylvinyl group are obtained by condensing a compound of the formula <FORM:1042192/C2/5> wherein R2 and R3 are as defined above, with an aldehyde of the formula R7.CHO in which R7 is an o-, m- or p-carboxyphenyl group or a 2-, 3- or 4-pyridyl group in a solvent in the presence of a sodium alkoxide. Starting compounds for process (a) are khellinone or visnaginone, and for process (b) are khellin or visnagin.
