titleOfInvention Polymeric vehicles for coating compositions
abstract Vehicles for coating compositions comprise (1) an interpolymer of (a) 2 to 15% by weight of a hydroxyalkyl ester of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (b) 1 to 5% by weight of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (c) at least one alkyl ester of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and optionally (d) up to about 40% by weight of a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon; (2) 10 to 40% by weight of an alcohol-modified amine-aldehyde resin; and (3) 5 to 35% by weight of an alkyd resin, said weight percentages of (2) and (3) being based on the total non-volatile resins. Monomer components (a) and (c) are preferably derived from acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric or itaconic acid; such acids are also suitable as monomer component (b). Monomer (a) may be an alkylene glycol monoester or a polyhydroxyalkyl ester. Monomer (d) is usually styrene, alpha-alkyl styrene or vinyl-toluene. Component (2) is the product obtained by etherifying with an alcohol the alkylol groups present in amine-aldehyde condensation resins; the aldehyde component may be acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, acrolein, benzaldehyde, furfural or, preferably, formaldehyde, and the amine component may be selected from melamine or urea and derivatives thereof, dicyandiamide, ammeline, guanamine derivatives, guanidines, diazines, triazines and triazoles. The alkyd resin (3) may be saturated or unsaturated and oil-modified or non-oil-modified; where the alkyd resin contains ethylenic unsaturation, it may be copolymerized with one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, e.g. an alkyd resin derived in part from maleic anhydride is copolymerized with methyl methacrylate and n-butyl methacrylate using dicumyl peroxide as catalyst (Example H). The vehicles are combined with conventional pigments, e.g. an aluminium-containing paste and colour pigments, and solvents, e.g. xylene, to form coating compositions. Component (1) of the vehicle may be prepared by polymerizing the monomer components at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst such as cumene hydroperoxide, benzoyl peroxide, ammonium persulphate or azo-bisisobutyronitrile, preferably in a solvent with additional catalyst being added during polymerization.
