titleOfInvention | Adducts of a halogen-containing epoxide and a monomeric polyhydric compound |
abstract | The invention comprises adducts of a compound <FORM:1040849/C2/1> where each X is F, Cl or Br and n is 0-5, with a polyhydric monomeric compound, and their production by reacting at elevated temperature at least one molar proportion of the epoxide with one molar proportion of polyhydric compound in the presence of a Lewis acid as catalyst, e.g. BF3, BF3-etherate, BCl3, AlCl3, TiCl4, SnCl4, FeCl3 or an acidic clay. Specified polyhydric compounds are ethylene, propylene, 1,4-butylene, diethylene, dipropylene, neopentyl, triethylene, and hexamethylene glycols, glycerol, hexanetriol, butanetriol, trimethylol propane, trimethylol ethane, polyglycerol, pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, polypentaerythritol, erythritol, mannitol, sorbitol, 2-butene- 1,4-diol, 2-butyne-1,4-diol, bis-phenol A, resorcinol, catechol, hydroquinone, methyl glucoside and 4,41-dihydroxybenzophenone. The adducts are used in making polyurethane foams (see Division C3).ALSO:Polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting an adduct of a polyhydric monomeric compound with a compound <FORM:1040849/C3/1> where each X is F, Cl or Br and n is 0-5 (see Division C2), said adduct having a hydroxyl number of 30-800, with an organic polyisocyanate in amount at least 0.7 NCO groups to each OH group present, and also a foaming agent (such as H2O, CFCl3, CF2Cl2, CFCl2.CF2Cl, CH2Cl2, CHCl3 and CCl4) and a catalyst (e.g. a tertiary amine or a metal salt). Carboxylic acids, polyesters or hydroxy compounds may also be present, as well as fillers such as clay, CaSO4 or (NH4)3PO4; dyes, fibrous glass, asbestos or synthetic fibres; and plasticizers, deodorants and anti-oxidants. Suitable reactants are listed. |
