titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to transfer sheets
abstract Compositions used in making transfer sheets (see Division D2) comprise: (1) polystyrene emulsion, carbon black, butyl benzyl phthalate, butadiene-styrene copolymer emulsion and water; (2) polystyrene emulsion, alkylketene dimer, carbon black, butadiene-styrene copolymer emulsion and water; (3) and (4) polystyrene emulsion, butadiene-styrene copolymer, phthalocyanine blue and water; (5), (6) and (7) similar to (3) but with polyvinyl chloride latex, polyacrylic emulsion and polyvinyl chloride emulsion respectively in place of the polystyrene.ALSO:A transfer sheet comprises a flexible foundation, e.g. of paper, and a coating of discrete spheres of organic polymer, e.g. polystyrene, and a non-waxy adhesive. The adhesive is present in an amount sufficient to hold the polymer spheres to one another and to the foundation, but not to hold them to the foundation when subjected to local pressure. The coating is equivalent to 1/2 to 3 1/2 ounces per 100 sq. ft. of foundation, and may also contain colouring matter, e.g. copper phthalocyanine or carbon black. The organic polymer of the spheres may be polystyrene, a polyacrylic resin or polyvinyl chloride. The adhesive may be polyvinyl alcohol, starch, starch ether, chlorinated or oxidized starch, carboxymethyl-cellulose, partial pentaerythritol ester of wood rosin, gelatin, polyacrylamide, vinyl acetate polymer or copolymer, polymer of an acrylic acid derivative, a butadiene-styrene copolymer, acrylic-vinylidene chloride copolymer or casein. The transfer coating may also include a plasticizer, calcium, potassium or ammonium stearate, a polyoxyethylene glycol, lecithin, polybutene, polyethylene, soft wax or alkylketene dimer. The transfer sheet may have a release coating of vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, polyamide, acrylic or methacrylic polymers, hydroxyethyl-cellulose, sodium silicate or colloidal silica, between the base and the transfer coating. The transfer sheet may be used with a copy-receiving sheet of paper having a coating of calcium carbonate and adhesive. When pressure is applied locally, the transfer layer is completely transferred, in the areas to which pressure is applied, to the copy-receiving sheet, so that the transfer sheet itself also forms a legible copy. The trace may be made permanent by heating the transfer sheet or copy-receiving sheet or both to a temperature at which the polymer is fluid, so that its discrete particles coalesce and are no longer pressure-sensitive.
