titleOfInvention Unsaturated fatty acids
abstract Aliphatic unsaturated monocarboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding aldehyde at a temperature between 200 DEG and 500 DEG C. at a pressure between 0.5 and 6 atmospheres in the presence of a catalyst comprising bismuth, molybdenum, tungsten, antimony, and trioxide, which contains also boric acid or oxide, and phosphoric acid or phosphorus pentoxide. Activators such as vanadium, ferric, chromic or manganic oxides may be present and silica as silica gel, diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr or silicic acid, or alumimium oxide may be used as a carrier. Aldehydes mentioned are acrolein, methacrolein, crotonaldehyde, pentanols and hexenols and substituted acrolein, and examples describe the preparation of acrylic acid with by-products such as esters, aldehydes and ketones.ALSO:Oxidation catalysts comprise an oxide of at least two of the metals molybdenum, bismuth, tungsten, antimony and tin, in admixture with boric acid or oxide and phosphoric acid or pentoxide. Promoters which may be vanadium, ferric, chromic, and monganic oxides may be present and silicon dioxide obtained for example by the thermal decomposition of silicon tetrachloride, is used as a carrier. Other carriers may be silica gel, diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr or silica acid gel or sol, aluminium oxide. Nitric acid may also be present. Examples describe the preparation of the catalysts.
