titleOfInvention A method for producing copolymers
abstract 1,038,726. Polyolefin graft polymers. CHISSO CORPORATION. Sept. 18, 1963 [Sept. 18, 1962], No. 36797/63. Heading C3G. A homo- or co-polymer of an olefin containing a tertiary carbon atom is hydroperoxidized and then contacted with a liquid vinylidene compound and a solvent therefor, together with water and a lower valent compound of a polyvalent metal, thereby forming a graft polymer. The starting polyolefin is preferably hydroperoxidized by exposing it to ultra-violet light in the presence of oxygen and a light sensitizer, e.g. benzophenone or acetophenone. Vinylidene monomers specified are vinyl acetate, acrylic and methacrylic esters, styrene, vinyl pyridine, vinyl pyrrolidone, glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate and glycidyl vinyl urethane. As solvents therefor there are specified ketones, alkanols, ethers and cyclic hydrocarbons. Polyvalent metal compounds specified are ferrous, cerous, chromous and cobaltous salts. The Examples describe grafting: (1 and 2) glycidyl methacrylate on to a film of polypropylene, (3) glycidyl methacrylate on to a polypropylene monofilament, (4) methyl methacrylate on to a polypropylene film, (5) glycidyl acrylate on to a polypropylene film, (6) methyl methacrylate on to a polybutene-1 film and (7) methyl methacrylate on to an ethylene-propylene copolymer film.
