titleOfInvention Electron discharge device
abstract 1,038,031. Cathode-ray storage tubes; television pick-up tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 3, 1963 [May 31, 1962], No. 17620/63. Heading H1D. In a cathode-ray tube in which a charge pattern is produced and stored on a target 30, electrons are projected on to the target with an energy corresponding to that portion of the secondary emission curve of the target in which secondary emission increases with an increase in potential between the electron source 40 and target 30 to cause differential secondary emission from the target elements and consequent enhancement of the strength of the charge pattern. The invention may be used in vidicon, iconoscope or image orthicon camera tubes or in image display storage tubes. As shown, the device is sensitive to thermal radiation and comprises a faceplate 13 of sapphire, calcium fluoride or barium fluoride, and a target 30 including a transparent conductive layer 32 and a photo-conductive layer 33 of antimony trisulphide, arsenic trisulphide or arsenic triselenide supported by a glass or aluminium oxide film 31. A charge pattern on target 30 is enhanced by a flood beam from gun 40, or by a scanning beam, which may be used sequentially with the writing and reading phases of the tube, or simultaneously with the writing phase.
