titleOfInvention Production of refractory silica articles
abstract In the production of silica articles, an aqueous suspension of silica particles is flocculated by adding an ammonium salt, then formed into shape and fired. The silica may be crystalline or vitreous, e.g. fused quartz, and may be mixed with water in a SiO2: H2O ratio of 1:1 to 5:1, then ball milled to give particles of size 1-15 m , preferably with over 50% in the 2-8 m range. The ammonium salt may be carbonate, nitrate, formate or acetate, and may be added, as a solid or in aqueous solution, in proportions of 0.05-1% by weight based on the silica. The resulting paste may be cast in a mould, dried, removed, and fired at 800-1200 DEG C. The fired articles may be used for lining furnaces or may be impregnated with tar or pitch and used for lining iron-casting ladles or tapping nozzles.
