titleOfInvention | 3-unsubstituted í¸-19-norsteroids and process for their manufacture |
abstract | The invention comprises steroids of the formula <FORM:1037015/C2/1> wherein R is an oxo group or a free, esterified or etherified hydroxyl group in the b -position with a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group of up to 7 carbon atoms in the a -position) and their preparation by pyrolysis of steroids of the formula <FORM:1037015/C2/2> (wherein X is an acyloxy group and R1 is an oxo group or an esterified or etherified hydroxyl group in the b -position with a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group of up to 7 carbon atoms in the a -position) followed, when required, by convension of an esterified or etherified hydroxyl group to a free hydroxyl group, re-esterification or -etherification of this or oxidation of this to an oxo group, or reduction of an oxo group, if desired with the simultaneous introduction of a hydrocarbon group into the 17a -position. Examples are given. The steroids of the invention, which variously have anabolic, progestative, ovulation-inhibiing, oestrogenic and anticholesterolaemic activity, may be made up into pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions for enteral, parenteral or local administration. They may contain, in addition to carriers, preserving, stabilizing, wetting or emulsifying agents, salts for regulating the osmotic pressure, or buffers. |
