A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a base lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a diaryl chloroalkyl phosphate or thiophosphate of the general formula (RO)2P(X)OCH2.C(CH2Cl)3 wherein R is an aryl group optionally containing one or more C1-C10 alkyl groups and X is oxygen or sulphur (see Division C2). The additive has extreme pressure properties and the base lubricating oil is preferably an aliphatic carboxylic acid ester, e.g. an aliphatic diester of a C6-C20 dibasic aliphatic carboxylic acid, e.g. an ester of adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic or sebacic acid with lauryl, heptyl, octyl or nonyl alcohol or the base oil may be a synthetic ester of the type disclosed in Specification 959,545. Other specified conventional additives may also be present, e.g. thickeners, anti-oxidants, anti-lacquering agents, anti-foaming agents, dyes, anti-corrosion agents, metal deactivators and additional extreme-pressure additives, e.g. chlorinated di- or poly-phenyls and tri-aryl esters of phosphorothionic acid.ALSO:The invention comprises di-aryl chloroalkyl phosphates and thiophosphates of the general formula (RO)2P(X).OCH2C(CH2C1)3 wherein R is an aryl group optionally containing one or more alkyl groups, each having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and X is oxygen or sulphur. They may be obtained by reacting an appropriate chloroalkyl oxetane with hydrogen chloride and then treating the alcohol formed with a phosphorochloridate of the general formula (RO)2P(X)C1. Examples are given for the production of diphenyl and di-octylphenyl-2,2 - bis - (chloromethyl) - 3 - chloropropyl phosphates. Other products specified are the corresponding diphenyl- and di-octylphenyl-2,2-bis - (chloromethyl) - 3 - chloropropyl phosphorothionates. The products are useful as additives for lubricating oils (see Division C4). 2,2 - Bis - (chloromethyl) - 3 - chloropropanol is obtained by bubbling HC1 through molten 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl) oxetane. Di-p-octyl phenyl phosphorochloridate is obtained by reacting p-octyl phenol with phosphoryl chloride in the molar ratio of 2: 1. |
