titleOfInvention Block copolymers and compositions containing them
abstract Thermoplastic elastomeric block copolymers are made which are of the form A-B-A in which each A is a polymer block which is derived from a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and has an average molecular weight of 10,000 to 45,000 and a glass transition temperature above 50 DEG C., and B is a polymer block which is derived from a conjugated diene and has an average molecular weight of 35,000 and 150,000, the difference in glass transition temperature between blocks A and B being at least 100 DEG C., the blocks A constituting at least 38% by weight of the block copolymer. The copolymers are prepared by the sequential polymerization of vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. styrene, and conjugated dienes, e.g. butadiene and isoprene, using lithium metal or an organo-lithium compound as a catalyst. The resulting block copolymers may be compounded with carbon black and titanium dioxide and, especially, extending oils, e.g. cyclic hydrocarbon oils.
