titleOfInvention Polymerization catalyst system and process
abstract A polymerization catalyst composition comprises the product obtained by mixing under anhydrous conditions (A) an alkanolamine of the formula MO-Z-NR2 where Z is a divalent hydrocarbon radical and substitution products thereof in which each substituent group is an -OM, OR1 or NH2 group and M represents an alkali metal, R1 represents hydrogen, an alkyl, or acyl radical, R represents hydrogen, an alkyl radical, or a substituted alkyl radical in which each substituent radical is -OR1, OM or -NR112, R11 represents hydrogen, an alkyl radical, or a substituted alkyl radical in which each substituent radical is OR1, -OM, or NR1112 and R111 represents hydrogen or an alkyl radical, and the total number of carbon atoms in the compound is no more than 60, the number of alkali metal and nitrogen atoms each being no more than 3, and the number of oxygen atoms being no more than 6, or an alkali metal salt thereof with (B) a halide, oxide, alcoholate, or ester of manganese or a metal of Group IV(b), V(b), VI(b) or VIII, and (C) a Group I, II, III, IV(b), V(b) or VI(b), metal, or hydride, or hydrocarbon compound of such metals wherein the hydrocarbon contains no more than 10 carbon atoms, and, if desired, (D) an aryl mercaptan. The Specification contains long lists of suitable catalysts, and catalyst components, such as TiCl3, aluminium trialkyls, di- and tri-isopropanolamine, triethanolamine, N-ethyl diisopropanolamine, and the mono-, di- or trisodium or lithium salts thereof, and thiocresol and phenyl mercaptan. The preparation of the alkanolamines is described in co-pending Specification 1,035,208. The catalysts are used to polymerize ethylenically unsaturated compounds such as ethylene, propylene, butene-1, n-pentene. butadiene, vinyl cyclo-hexane or pentane, vinyl cyclohexene, styrene and substituted styrenes, vinyl naphthylene and substituted naphthalenes, vinyl methyldiphenyl and vinyl chlorodiphenyl and a mixture of butadiene or propylene and styrene. The polymerization and recovery of the polymers is by conventional "low pressure" methods. The polymers may be fractionated by solvent extraction. The catalyst is preferably prepared by adding the mercaptan to the aluminium trialkyl, reacting this product with the alkanolamine and then adding component (B), e.g. TiCl3.
