titleOfInvention | A process for the production of polymers of conjugated dienes |
abstract | Polymers of conjugated diolefins are produced by polymerizing (A) 100 to 30% by weight of one or more conjugated diolefins and either (B) 0 to 50% by weight of a copolymerizable vinyl or vinylidene monomer with an activated double bond, or (C) 0 to 70% by weight of styrene at temperatures from -20 DEG to +150 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst which is a compound of the general formula MeSiR3 wherein Me represets a sodium or potassium atom and each R, which may be the same or different, represents a C1 to C8 alkyl radical, a phenyl radical, a C1 to C8 alkyl-substituted phenyl radical, a cycloalkyl radical having 5 to 7 carbon atoms, or a C1 to C8 alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl radical having 5 to 7 carbon atoms, at least one of the radicals R representing a phenyl or alkyl phenyl radical. Polymerization is carried out in the presence of 10 to 500% of solvent by weight of the monomers. When the solvent is toluene it is found that aromatic nuclei become bonded to the polymer chain. The polymerization reaction may be stopped by adding a protonactive substance, e.g. water and acetic acid. The comonomers exemplified are acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate; in the case of acrylonitrile a small amount of the nitrile homopolymer is formed. The polymers are generally oils or semi-solids. |
