titleOfInvention | Ionic hydrocarbon polymers |
abstract | An ionic cross-linked copolymer comprises at least 5.0 mol per cent of one or more a -olefines of formula RCH = CH2, where R is H or a C1- 8 alkyl, and 0.2-25 mol per cent of one or more a -b -ethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids, the anhydrides and monoesters of the dicarboxylic acids and mixtures thereof, the copolymer having sufficient complex metal cations distributed therethrough to neutralize at least 10% of the carboxylic acid groups of the copolymer. The cations having a residual positive electrovalence of 1, 2 or 3 when the acid comonomer is a mono-carboxylic acid and of 1 when it is a di-carboxylic acid. The acid comonomer may be acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, itaconic, maleic and/or fumaric acids or methyl hydrogen maleate, methyl hydrogen fumarate, ethyl hydrogen fumarate and/or maleic anhydride. The olefine comonomer may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1,pentene-1, hexene-1,3-methylbutene-4 and/or 4-methylbutene-1. The copolymer may contain units derived from a third monomer, e.g. vinyl acetate or methyl methacrylate. The metal of the complex action may be Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cu, Cd, Hg, Sn, Pb, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Al, Sc or Y. The groups co-ordinately linked to the metal in the cation may be oleate or stearate. The copolymer may be produced by admixing a copolymer of the above a -olefines and acids, anhydrides and/or monoesters, with a metal compound soluble in water to an extent of at least 2%, which consists of the above complex metal cation ionically linked to an anionic radical, mixing being carried out at a temperature which is such that the product formed by the combination of the anionic radical of the metal compound and hydrogen is volatilized from the mixture. Examples describe the treatment of copolymers of ethylene and maleic anhydride or methacrylic acid by milling with zinc mono-acetate mono-stearate and a mixture of zinc oxide, stearic acid and acetic acid. |
