titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of benzene carboxylic acids |
abstract | Benzenecarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting the corresponding methyl-substituted benzene compounds with oxygen in presence of a cobalt salt of a C2-4 fatty acid in a solvent medium of 25-70% benzene and 75-30% said fatty acid, by volume. A methylenic ketone activator may also be present. Examples describe the preparation of terephthalic acid from p-xylene, but also mentioned is the application of the process to the preparation of benzoic acid from toluene, isophthalic acid from m-xylene or m-toluic acid, terephthalic acid from p-toluic acid, and chloro- and nitroterephthalic acids from 1,4-dimethyl-2-chloro-and -nitro-benzenes. |
