titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to catalysts
abstract Polymerization of ethylene, propylene, butene, isobutene oxides, epichlorohydrin, cyclohexene oxides, vinyl cyclohexene epoxides, alkyl glycidyl ethers, styrene oxide, a -methyl styrene oxide and butadiene mono- and di-oxides is effected in the presence of a catalyst made by reacting an alkyl aluminium compound with a chelating agent and water and adding to the mixture so formed a further quantity of the alkyl aluminium compound or of a different alkyl aluminium compound. Polymerization and copolymerization is exemplified at low temperature 5 DEG C., completion taking about 16 hours.ALSO:Polymerisation catalysts are made by reacting an alkyl aluminium compound with a chelating agent and water, and mixing the reaction product with a further quantity of an alkyl aluminium compound which may be the same as or different from the initial aluminium compound. Mentioned as alkyl aluminium compounds are trialkyl and tricycloalkyl aluminium compounds, dialkyl aluminium hydrides, monoalkyl aluminium hydrides, dialkyl aluminium halides, monoalkyl aluminium dihalides, dialkyl aluminium alkoxides, monoalkyl aluminium dialkoxides and complexes e.g. alkali metal aluminium tetraalkyls. The alkyl groups may contain up to eight carbon atoms. Chelating agents mentioned are acetyl acetone, trifluoroacetyl acetone, dibenzoyl methane, acetoacetic acid and ester, formylacetone, hydroxy ethylmethyl ketone, hydroxyacetene, o-hydroxy acetophenone, salicyl aldehyde, ethyl glycollate, 2-hydroxyethylacetate, oxalic and malonic acids and esters and 2:5 dihydroxy p-benzoquinone.
