titleOfInvention | 16-substituted androstanes |
abstract | The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1031748/C2/1> wherein R is oxygen or a -(H)-b -(OR1), and R1 is hydrogen or an acyl group having 2 to 5 carbon atoms, and their preparation by (a) catalytic hydrogenation of a corresponding androst-5-en-16-ylidene acetic acid, (b) partial or complete hydrolysis of a diacrylate, (c) acylation, or (d) oxidation of a 3-ol to a 3-ketone with chromium trioxide. The compounds of the invention have anabolic activity. 3b ,17b - Diacetoxy - 5a - androstan - 16b - yl acetic acid and 3b ,17b -dihydroxy-5(a or b ) androstan-16b -yl acetic acid lactone are obtained as by-products from the above mentioned hydrogenation process. |
