titleOfInvention Method of making tio pigment
abstract Pigmentary titanium dioxide is prepared by reacting titanium tetrachloride with an oxygen-containing gas in a process wherein an inert fluid is preheated to 3000-12,000 DEG C. by a plasma jet generator, the heated fluid is combined with one of the reactants (a), the other reactant, either (i) with or (ii) without preheating by means of an additional portion of inert fluid, is combined with (a) and the resulting total mixture is passed into a reaction zone at 800-3000 DEG C., the residence time of the reactants in the reaction zone being 0.001 to 1 second. In sequence (i), the temperatures of the mixture of inert fluid and TiCl4 (and oxygen-containing gas) may be 600-3000 DEG C. (and 600-400 DEG C.) respectively. The 2 streams of inert fluid may be heated to 8000-10,000 DEG C. and after mixture of each stream with one of the reactants the temperature is 800-2100 DEG C. The inert fluid may be nitrogen, argon or carbon dioxide and the oxygen-containing gas is preferably oxygen. The quantity of inert fluid contained in the total mixture is 3-95% by volume. The quantity of oxygen supplied to the reaction zone is at least the stoichiometric quantity needed to react with all the TiCl4. The residence time of the reactants in the reaction zone may be 0.01 to 0.5 second and preferably about 0.05 to 0.1 second and the temperature of the reaction mixture in the reaction zone is about 1200-2100 DEG C. The two reactant streams preferably meet at an angle with respect to each other of 50 to 160 degrees. A small amount of aluminium chloride (0.1 to 4% by weight based on the weight of TiO2, measured as aluminium oxide) may be introduced into the reaction zone to increase the yield of rutile titanium dioxide obtained.
