titleOfInvention | Polyesters and the preparation thereof |
abstract | Linear polyesters are obtained by condensing an alkali metal diphenate with a phenylphosphonic acid dihalide, the alkali metal diphenate being dissolved in water and the phenylphosphonic acid dihalide being dissolved in a water-immiscible organic liquid in which the polyester formed by the reaction is at least to some extent soluble. The reaction mixture may include a dicarboxylic acid dihalide, an aromatic disulphonic acid dihalide or an aromatic monocarboxy sulphonic acid dihalide. The polymer contains recurring units of formula <FORM:1031481/C3/1> where Ar is an arylene group, X is a carbon atom, an alkylene group, an alkylidene group, a cycloaliphatic group, a radical containing sulphur, an ether group, a carbonyl group, a tertiary amino group, or two or more alkylene or alkylidene groups linked by an arylene group, a tertiary amino group, an ether group, a carbonyl group or a group containing sulphur, R is a halogen atom, alkyl group, aryl group, aralkyl group, alkaryl group, cycloaliphatic group or halogenated alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or cycloaliphatic group, Y is a halogen atom, nitro group, or a radical R1 or OR1 where R1 is one of the groups listed in respect of R above, n and m are 0 or appropriate integers, p is at least 1, q is 0 or 1 and r is 0 or an integer. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a quaternary ammonium, phosphonium or arsonium compound or a tertiary sulphonium compound. In examples, polyesters are prepared from diphenates obtained from 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane, bis-(4 - hydroxyphenyl) - methylphenylmethane and an isomeric mixture of bis-(hydroxyphenyl)-methane, together with phenylphosphonic acid dichloride, isophthaloyl chloride, terephthaloyl chloride, 4,41 - dichlorosulphonyldiphenyl and m - chlorosulphonylbenzoyl chloride. Lists of other materials are given. |
