abstract | Fluid dispersions containing more than 50 weight per cent total solids comprise 25 to 95 weight per cent of total solids of a thermosettable resin and 5 to 75 weight per cent of total solids of a wax-like, solid, fluorocarbon polymer having a molecular weight of 1300 to 15000, a crystalline melting point of 225 DEG to 320 DEG C., a chlorine content of 0.05 to 2 weight per cent and a hydrogen content of 0.05 to 2 weight per cent, and being the reaction product of 1 mol. tetrafluoroethylene, a solution of 0.01 to 0.6 mol. active telogen and 1.7 to 15 mols. trichlorotrifluoroethane in the presence of 0.05 to 3 weight per cent based on tetrafluoroethylene of a free radical generating catalyst. The compositions may also comprise high molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylenes, reinforcing agents, e.g. silica, asbestos, glass flour and fibres, metallic fibres, cellulose fibres and carbon black; and lubricants, e.g. graphite, molybdenum disulphide, tungsten disulphide, boron nitride, talc, vermiculite, silver sulphide and lead monoxide; and may be used for casting shaped articles or coating, e.g. metal, wood, glass, plastics, rubbers, leather and cloth. Many suitable thermosettable resins are specified, including phenolic and rosin, rosin ester and alkyd modified phenolic resins; ureaformaldehyde and melamine - formaldehyde resins; saturated and unsaturated polyester and phenol and drying oil modified polyester resins; epoxy and polyester, phenolic and fatty acid modified epoxy resins; reaction products of polyesters and polyethers with polyisocyanates; thermosetting methyl, ethyl and methyl phenyl silicones; furfuryl alcohol polymers and reaction products of furfural with aniline, ketones and phenols; and thermosetting acrylic resins. Polymerization and curing catalysts, e.g. peroxides, amines and acids may be present. Examples describe compositions comprising wax-like, solid, fluorocarbon polymers, and (I and II) epoxy resin and triethylene tetramine; (III) orthophthalic based polyester, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt octoate; (IV) furfuryl alcohol resin and p-toluene sulphonic acid; (V) epoxy resin, triethylene tetramine and graphite; (VI) epoxy resin, tetraethylene pentamine and silica; (VII) epoxy resin, polyamide resin, copper bronze powder and ethoxyethyl acetate; (VIII) epoxy resin, triethylene diamine, ethoxyethyl acetate, toluene and n-butanol; (IX) epoxy resin, triethylene tetramine, ethoxyethyl acetate and trichloro-trifluoroethane; (X) phenol/formaldehyde resin and organic solvent; (XI) alkylated urea/formaldehyde resin, ethoxyethanol, toluene and n-butanol; (XII) silicone resin, ethoxyethanol, toluene and n-butanol; (XIII) soya oil modified alkyd resin, lead octoate, cobalt octoate and xylene; (XIV) an ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, ethoxyethanol, toluene, xylene and n-butanol; (XV) polyurethane resin and organic solvents; and (XVI) phenol/formaldehyde resin, an aqueous dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene, ethoxyethanol, toluene and n-butanol.ALSO:Substrates may be coated with fluid dispersions containing more than 50 weight per cent total solids and comprising 25 to 95 weight per cent of total solids of a thermosettable resin and 5 to 75 weight per cent of total solids of a wax-like, solid, fluorocarbon polymer having a molecular weight of 1300 to 15000, a crystalline melting point of 225 to 320 DEG C., a chlorine content of 0. 05 to 2 weight per cent and a hydrogen content of 0. 05 to 2 weight per cent, and being the reaction product of 1 mol of tetrafluoroethylene, a solution of 0. 01 to 0. 6 mol of active telogen and 1.7 to 15 mols of trichlorotrifluoroethane in the presence of 0. 05 to 3 weight per cent based on the tetrafluoroethylene of a free radical generating catalyst. Specified substrates are metal, wood, glass, plastics, rubbers, leather and cloth. The compositions may also contain high molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylenes reinforcing agents, solid lubricants and volatile solvents. Examples describe the application of compositions comprising wax-like, solid, fluorocarbon polymers and (I and II) epoxy resin and triethylene tetramine to wood panels; (III) orthophthalic based polyester, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt octoate to wood panels; (V) epoxy resin, triethylene tetramine and graphite to steel panels; (VII) epoxy resin, polyamide resin, copper bronze powder and ethoxyethyl acetate to birch plywood panels; (VIII) epoxy resin, triethylene diamine, ethoxyethyl acetate, toluene and n-butanol to steel panels; (IX) epoxy resin, triethylene tetramine, ethoxyethyl acetate, and trichlorotrifluoroethane to wood panels; (X) phenol/formaldehyde resin and organic solvents to glass; (XI) alkylated urea/formaldehyde resin, ethoxyethanol, toluene and n-butanol to glass; (XII) silicone resin, ethoxyethanol, toluene and n-butanol to glass and steel; (XIII) soya oil modified alkyl resin, lead octoate, cobalt octoate and xylene to wood, cloth, leather, natural rubber and butyl rubber; (XIV) an ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer, ethoxyethanol, toluene, xylene and n-butanol to steel; (XV) polyurethane resin and organic solvents to rubber; and (XVI) phenol/formaldehyde resin, an aqueous dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene, ethoxyethanol, toluene and n-butanol to steel and wood. |
